My parents are pretty awesome. I recently bought a Jeep Cherokee, and for my birthday they got me a set of KC HiLiTES Slimlites!

Kinja'd!!!

The Jeep came with a small off brand light bar that actually works pretty darn well. So with these, the darkness will have no where left to run.

30 second Paint mock-up of what my Jeep will look like. But blue.

Covers on or off?

I like them. Driving lights really fit the character of Minis.

They are. I have only had a chance to actually use them once so far because you can’t really use driving lights in a city. I am planning on pulling the covers off for my drive home on Friday and will be using them a bunch driving home from work at 11pm during vacation.

Covers on. It’s required by law.

Since we’re on the topic of XJ’s and lights, have you upgraded the headlights with a relay harness yet?

I was referring to the KC plastic grill that clips on to the light. As far as I am aware, solid covers are not required (in Ohio).

As for the relay harness, no I have not. They are already brighter than the headlights in my DD, so I haven’t had a need to improve the wiring situation. I may look into it.

Sure they’ll get brighter. My concern is more the whole thing where all the load goes through the switch which will eventually set itself on fire.

The light bar is wired directly with a toggle switch I put in the cab (super low load anyway), and the fog lights come with a relay harness for themselves, which will also have a toggle switch in the cab.

I’m talking about the head lights. You know, the ones installed by the factory.

It’s a known problem. The switch and wiring are barely up to the task of supporting the headlights as it is. Add any extra resistance (i.e. load) from ageing wires and corroding contacts, and it will start getting hot, eventually to the point of flames. And before you say “well mine is fine”, when mine caught fire and I was going through junkyard XJ’s looking for another connector, I gave up and bought a new one after the first dozen or so I found had melted connectors. Not to mention the whole flames-inside-the-dashboard thing.

An added bonus to adding the harness is that with the increase voltage at the lights due to better wiring, you’ll have brighter headlights, somewhere between 10-30% depending on the condition of the wires (or who you ask). It’s worth it for that reason alone, even aside from the part where your Jeep isn’t as likely to set itself on fire.
